Difficult beginnings
However, every path always begins with the first step.
The first, not very successful attempts and unattractive packaging with a lot of errors on the labels. This is the beginning. However, the beginning after which it didn't get any better.
We were as good at marketing as we were at production, so a lot of advertising materials became useless the moment they left the printing house.
When you don't have unlimited financial resources,
and we didn't have it, even when we work together
and don't receive a salary, it's hard not to notice that everything is heading in the wrong direction.
And yet...
The breakthrough came when we started cooperation with Bio Planet SA. Thanks to the scale of their distribution, the sales for our products increased dramatically. In an instant, our chocolates appeared in organic stores all over Poland. It was the moment when, thanks to increased sales, we could catch the financial wind and decide whether we wanted to take a step towards professionalizing production.
Trendsetters of Polish raw chocolate
Cold-grinded chocolate from unroasted grain was something new in Poland at that time. For us too. So it remains a mystery how we were perceived by the first consumers.
A drier and more intense taste, which, thanks to low production temperatures, is rich in many unevaporated cocoa aromas, did not have to be something that appealed to wide tastes.
Many years of trials and months spent returning home only to sleep resulted in the development of our own style and a fairly wide range of products.
The growing awareness of the COCOA brand allowed us to fight for greater availability on the market. Wider and professional distribution forced us to decide to expand. Moving from the 70 m2 of the old confectionery workshop to the adapted 600 m2 of the building after the knitting factory is a milestone for us, but at the same time it is a decision about huge loan burdens. Burdens that allow us to invest in machines enabling the professionalization of production, but also in expanding our staff. We still rely on family and people closely related to them. While at the beginning only people from the closest circle joined the team, now there are 16 people from their circle of friends and acquaintances. With such a team, we have expanded our portfolio. The key moment was the introduction of the so-called White COCOA line. This vegan version of chocolate, perfectly imitating the taste of milk chocolate, is not only milk-free, but also refined sugar and gluten-free. It quickly became our bestseller, both in Poland and in Europe. According to representatives of the trade industry, but also consumers, despite the presence of similar products on the market, the white COCOA line turned out to be something unexpectedly unique and innovative.
We remain faithful to our assumptions
We have gone from a company praising its products with the health benefits of raw RAW chocolate, ecological production standard, and vegan composition to an increasingly well-recognized manufacturer of quick eco-snacks, appreciated on the wide market. Our products are still RAW, ECO and vegetarian, but now we want to stand out with their taste. We want our recognition to grow because of taste.
This is one of the main reasons for the creation of the new brand OCTOchocolate, where we focus on niche premium products. It is under this brand that we managed to appear on the shelves of Harrods in London and the ecological delicatessen chain Planet Organic. Winning three bronze Academy of Chocolate awards in 2017, 2018 and 2019 for OCTO products confirmed our quality and the direction in which we are heading. We have been appreciated on most European markets, and on the extremely competitive German market, thanks to cooperation with distributors Dennree and Weiling, we present our offer in the prestigious ecological chains Denns and Biocompany.
